Two Factor Survey for Key
On May 12th, Dr. Moyer sent a letter from me communicating 2 significant cybersecurity related changes. I heard there may be some confusion and frustration regarding the Google 2-step verification change.
I want you to know I understand change is never easy. These changes are being implemented in response to guidance issued by NIST, CISA, and the NYSED Privacy Office. The NYSED privacy office sent a memo to all school district Data Protection Officers on 5/1/23. Below is an excerpt from that memo:
I understand some users may be uncomfortable providing their phone number to Google as part of the 2-step verification setup process. Therefore the district will purchase a security key for anyone who does not want to share a phone number or use a personal mobile device for authentication purposes. If you prefer to use a security key please complete this brief survey so security keys can be ordered. Please complete the survey by the end of the day on Monday, 5/22/23.
It has also been brought to my attention that some users may be prompted by Google to use the Promethean board as a 2nd form of authentication. At this time my department discourages users from enabling this, as the Promethean board cannot travel with you.
Here is a short video explaining explaining the setup of 2-step verification and several other videos can be found on YouTube with similar step by step instructions.
In the meantime if you have any additional questions or need assistance please email the Technology Help Desk.
Thank you for your continued support in trying to keep our district network infrastructure and data safe.
Best regards,
Mike
